True Believers

These legends are garrisoned throughout the Hopium Hideout and form the backbone of resistance against enemy clans. Through discipline and unwavering faith, different factions have gained unique, supernatural control of Green Magic.

True Believers carefully guard areas of Metawood Forest where the magic plants of their faction grow, and they often work closely with Builders using the same materials. Some True Believers will join multiple factions when allowed, while others have disdain or even hatred for different faiths. The politics of the True Believers is complex and ever-changing. Internal conflict and infighting is, unfortunately, very common. In fact, after reviewing this wiki page, many True Believers immediately complained that certain factions should not have even been included at all.

Most factions still find ways to work together when facing serious threats from enemies. They sometimes find themselves stuck together, fighting in the trenches, for weeks, months, or even an entire winter.

The result is a fluid dynamic of alliances and rifts. Although their attention shifts between fighting enemies and internal bickering, True Believers usually still manage to protect the forest and help it grow.

Factions also have different strengths and weaknesses:

  • Magic Power - True Believers rely heavily on mastery of Green Magic to defeat their enemies. Power describes a faction's overall magic strength and damage.
  • Magic Stealth - This is the degree to which True Believers can move through the Forest undetected and conduct their affairs free from the surveillance of hostile forces.
  • Magic Distribution - This describes a faction's distribution of Magic Generation across different nodes of forest. More concentration in fewer groups of trees can increase the speed of the faction's Magic Generation, but it can also weaken Enchantment Protection. The Magic Architecture of allied Builders determines the Magic Distribution of each faction.
  • Magic Generation - This is the speed at which True Believers can generate and re-generate magic.
  • Magic Cost - When using wood for spellcasting, some may be magically burned or paid as a fee to Mole Miners or Validator Voles for the use of trees from their territories. The specific Magic Architecture of Builders also significantly effects Magic Cost, including if and how any wood is paid or burned.
  • Enchantment Protection - This is the degree to which enchantments are secure and resistant to being dispelled, disrupted, or weakened.
  • Initiation - Some factions are more welcoming than others. This describes the difficulty involved in joining a faction and finding success in its ranks.

Below are some of the largest factions of True Believers. The Frenzyverse is home to many others, but these are currently a few of the most prominent:

Bitoak Warriors

This is the oldest and largest faction of True Believers who rely on using Bitnuts. Following the path of Nutoshi, they excel in Magic Distribution and Enchantment Protection. This gives them strong Magic Power, but quite slow Magic Generation. They wait fervently for each appearance of Halven the Wolverine as they battle enemies throughout the Frenzyverse.

The Warriors have strong integrations with supportive beavers, but Bitoak can be quite difficult to craft, being a hard, slow-growing wood. More recently, beavers have developed new techniques to build with Bitoak, allowing for new types of magic proliferation to support allied Warriors.

Established members are exceedingly loyal, and experienced, high-ranking Warriors are almost impervious to conversion.

These are some special units of the Warrior faction:

  • Maxi Marmot – A high priestess of the Warriors, she wields incredible control of Green Magic. Together with Hodel, she's bailed Ogi out of some serious messes. On occasion, she has single-handedly fought both General Crashfallen and a True Bear to a standstill, leaving other Warriors in awe. Her stubborn nature sometimes causes friction with other factions, but she is revered by most True Believers, even if begrudgingly.
  • Core Guard – These hulking Warriors are stationed in the Hasher Mines and help guard the roots of the mighty Bitoaks.

› LIGHTNING WARRIORS

  • These Warriors use Lightning Roots to enhance the magic from Bitnuts and increase Magic Generation. While effective, initiation into their ranks can be difficult, involving an number of complex rituals.

Aspeth Vangaurd

  • As the second largest faction, the Vanguard is well-established and relies on magic from Aspeth. They work closely with Aspeth Beavers to protect and develop many areas of Dapp River and the Defi Plains. Aspeth continues to be an incredibly popular material in the Frenzyverse, despite growing competition from other types of timber. The Vanguard seeks to harness all of its magic power, whether directly or through secondary enhancements.
  • The Vanguard is also quite strong in Magic Distribution and Enchantment Protection. But despite making some advancements in Magic Generation, the standard Vanguard still falls behind other factions in this area. Aspeth also has a high Magic Cost, although the Vanguard has also made recent improvements in this area, particularly via its sub-factions.
  • To increase Magic Generation and reduce Magic Cost, beavers use various magical berries to coat Aspeth Wood in a second layer of magic. This additional layer increases Magic Generation significantly, but also can affect Magic Distribution. As well, different sub-factions disagree on which berries to use and how to apply them.
  • This means there are growing concerns about fragmentation among the Vanguard's sub-factions, as well as the plans for the Aspeth Foundation, which helps direct the growth of Aspeth trees throughout the forest.

Sub-factions of the Vanguard include:

› OPTIMISTS

  • Optimists conduct magic rituals with Opti-mulberries, where they carefully roll a layer of mashed berries up Aspeth branches. Once applied, new spells assume incantations have been cast correctly, allowing faster chaining of spells and quicker Magic Generation.
  • Optimist Builders are renowned for their impressive Aspeth and berry architecture, which produces sequences of modular magic hubs and allows members of the Optimist faction to cast superchains of powerful magic.

› ARBITERS

  • Arbiters utilize Arberries, a variant of Opti-mulberries. Their rituals also involve coating Aspeth with a layer of mashed Arberriers to greatly increase Magic Generation.
  • They are famous for spell-casting efficiency, using special enchantments that spellbind in multi-round succession. This increases Enchantment Protection together with huge boosts to Magic Generation.

› BASED VANGAURD

  • The Based Vanguard uses yet another variant of Opti-mulberries, known as Baseberries. Associated rituals involve coating Aspeth in a layer of deep blue berry pulp to enhance Magic Generation, with some potential loss to Magic Distribution.
  • With a strong presence on Trader Range, the Based Vanguard is highly organized, and prioritizes seamless integration between its troops and allied beavers. Known for their industrious nature, Based Builders also carefully and tirelessly work to greatly enhance specific portions of the Aspeth ecosystem. This lockstep integration with allied beavers means the Based Vanguard can quickly deploy and build out supply chains to support trenches and advance relentlessly.
  • In addition, the Based Vanguard is known for its welcoming initiation rituals, offering many resources for new recruits to hone their skills. This includes using Stablecones to counteract Red Magic.

› POLYGUARD

  • The Polyguard relies on Polberries, which are used alongside Aspeth to enhance magic effects. Polberries massively improve Magic Generation, but also causes some loss in Magic Distribution.
  • The Polyguard can harness multiple magic disciplines, and this multifaceted skillset allows them to cast a variety of spells to overcome opponents. Polberries can form many unique combinations with Aspeth, which allows for bespoke spellbinding and adaptable enchantments. This makes the Polyguard highly versatile and acclaimed for fierce, rapid spellcasting.

Mapesol Mavericks

  • The Mavericks are a large and powerful faction that has added many new recruits in recent seasons. They excel in Magic Generation and low Magic Cost, but at the expense of Magic Distribution. The Magic Generation from Mapesol is so insane that Mavericks can move, attack, and spellcast at a blindingly fast pace.
  • As their name may suggest, Mavericks are also known for being risk takers, often charging into battle even when the odds are against them. Occasionally, chaotic advances have triggered lapses in Magic Power. This has caused some other factions to question the seriousness and discipline of the Mavericks, but their track record has continued to demonstrate that betting against them is a bad idea. They rallied back each time, and so far, have always restored Magic Power to full capacity.
  • Mapesol Wood is trickier to fashion than Aspeth, but it is incredibly fast growing. In addition, Mapesol Builders are some of the most energetic and hardworking beavers in the Frenzyverse. They continually upgrade Mapesol configurations to eliminate downtimes in Magic Power and improve Magic Distribution.
  • Mapesol spells are also highly intuitive. Once Mapesol beavers have the right configurations in place, Mavericks can quickly and easily tap into the resulting arcane energy. This is especially true on Dapp River and in the Defi Plains, where the Mavericks have a strong and growing presence.
  • The Mavericks are known for their inspiring initiation ceremonies, and the oldest members have remained loyal through brutal, grinding battles.

Binabirch Sentinels

  • Focused on Binabirch, the Sentinels are a significant and established faction, who work closely with the Vanguard. This is because Binabirch Builders intentionally created their architecture and magic configurations to be fully compatible with Aspeth Wood. They also constructed a number of bridges between sections of Binabirch and Aspeth forests for easy access across both ecosystems.
  • With a strong presence on Trader Range, the Sentinels have increased Magic Generation, but also at the expense of Magic Distribution. They emphasize straightforward spells that can be cast effectively with minimal Magic Cost, as Binabirch produces scalable spellbinding that supports simultaneous enchantments and spell-sharing with the Vanguard.
  • The Sentinels have broad membership, although past altercations with authorities in the Old-growth Forest have hindered recruitment in certain regions.

Adaler Army

  • The Army is a well-known and important faction, which emphasizes Magic Distribution and Enchantment Protection, while also significantly improving Magic Generation. It shares some of the key values of the Warrior faction, and many members of the Army also have respect for Warriors as the earliest fighters devoted to such principles.
  • However, the Army utilizes more complex, upgradable magic spells, which offer broader utility. While they have been criticized as difficult to lean and master, this has not dissuaded Army leaders, who aim for ultimate effectiveness over quick results. Sometimes considered less flashy than other factions, the Army emphasizes substance over style.
  • Similarly, Adaler Builders are known for their attention to detail and methodical craftsmanship, which produces impressive architecture and magic configurations, albeit sometimes at a relatively slow pace. With consistent growth and dedication, the Army advances patiently and persistently. Their technical battle plans may take many seasons to unfold, but they Army has survived multiple winters and is well-adjusted to life in the trenches.
  • The Army has three leadership branches, and this triadic structure has periodically caused internal conflict in pursuit of perfect spells and architecture. Members of the Army also take longer to train than other factions. But the Army is resilient. After initiation, soldiers are well-prepared and combat ready. Beyond mere magic and combat proficiency, high-ranking officers are expected to be both scholars of military strategy and mages with a deep understanding and mastery of arcane arts.

Suntron Knights

  • Knights harness enchantments from vibrant Suntron Wood, which produces excellent Magic Generation, though also at the expense of Magic Distribution. Suntron subsequently allows for quick spellcasting at an extremely low Magic Cost.
  • Suntron Builders are highly creative, and their architecture involves unique ways to store and share magic spells. Therefore, they have a strong focus on producing new spell patterns and magic content, which they distribute widely among allied Knights. Knights mastering shared spells can then release torrents of Green Magic against their enemies.
  • The Knights are also known for their wargames and celebrations, and Suntron is frequently used to create magical items for entertainment and forest events. This helps maintain strong morale with both established members and new recruits.

Ripplewood Legion

  • The Legion evangelizes Ripplewood and is made of two branches, the Ripplewood Army and the Old Guild. Their Army is also stationed in Metawood Forest and relies on Ripplewood for fast Magic Generation and low Magic Cost, once again at the expense of Magic Distribution.
  • However, the Legion differs from the other factions, as its second branch, the Old Guild, exists solely to coordinate with the Old-growth Forest, specifically the leaders of the Acorn Banks. The Legion insists that this will extend the reach and influence of Metawood Forest into areas previously controlled by old authorities.
  • Other factions such at the Warriors and Wraiths often accuse the Legion of selling out to the banks, and giving up key principles for influence and old-world wealth. In response, the Legion argues that magic efficiency should supersede ideological purity. It further contends that it offers a strategic bridge between old and new ways, which is not selling out, but transforming old institutions and systems.
  • Marines utilize Linkberries to obtain incredible durability and Magic Protection in combat. This allows them to deploy and thrive in the harshest terrains, like the sweltering jungles of Lockpool Lagoon, arid sections of Dao Desert, and desolate stretches of the Defi Plains.
  • Linkberries can augment the Magic Protection of countless types of wood, and Linked Builders are well-known for working with diverse materials to add Linkberry enhancements to existing architecture. This allows Marines to integrate easily with other factions. In particular, they have strong, well-established alliances with the Vanguard and its sub-factions.
  • While the Marines are a formidable fighting force on their own, their versatility means it is common for other factions to receive Marine support. In fact, it is often unwise for other factions to travel to places like Dex Basin or Yielder Cove without some Marine cover.

› ORACLES

  • These special members of the Marines are powerful wizards with the ability to interpret magic oscillations though divine visions. As learned scholars, they record their prophecies in special magic tomes, which are studied by the Marines and shared with other factions.
  • By discerning the condition and health of ecosystems across the Frenzyverse, Oracles can sense and foresee many magic patterns. This helps them guide the Marines and their allies in the heat of battle. Their supernatural abilities also allow them to conserve Green Magic and protect it from being manipulated or dispelled.

Moneroot Wraiths

  • Wraiths use the mystical Moneroot to cast powerful concealment spells. In addition to strong Magic Distribution and Protection, they have maximized Magic Stealth, which allows them to move like untraceable ghosts through the forest. Marked only by barely discernable rings of mist, they inspire many mixed emotions among other factions.
  • Wraiths are highly principled and view privacy and freedom as fundamental rights of every forest animal. This means that all animals have access to Moneroot architecture, even if Criminowls, Hackoons, and Skam Skunks can also use it to evade forest authorities. The Wraiths are not aligned with these enemy groups, but their values require that Moneroot be universally available to all animals, as an ultimate means of protection from surveillance, censorship, and abuses of power.
  • While Wraiths are exceptionally private, they sometimes work with other factions that trade their loot or timber for Moneroot to gain cloaking abilities. For example, some Wraiths have regard for Warriors, who share certain similar values.
  • As a result, Wraiths are despised by officials of the Old-growth Forest, who hate their cloaking abilities and their willingness to also confer them on other animals. Wraiths have even been banned from some areas of Trader Range for refusing to cooperate with A.M. Llama and K.Y. Chinchilla. In addition, factions like the Legion, who prioritize ties with established authorities, often distance themselves from the Wraiths.
  • In the end, steadfast in their convictions, the Wraiths really just don't give a fud.

Faction Politics

As shown above, factions have different values, divergent goals, and use magic differently. There is also a complex relationship between various factions and their views on integration and communication with authorities in the Old-growth Forest.

…and those are only a few examples. There are hundreds of other highly regarded factions in the Frenzyverse, each vying for space and authority in the Hopium Hideout and across the broader ecosystem. The power and influence of each faction continues to change as the forest evolves.

Diverging views, squabbles for power, and internal conflict can fractures morale, but True Believers continue to endure, ready to fight through each winter for a brighter future.
